Time Management struggles

Sorry I haven’t posted in around a month.  But I get busy with other things.  One of which is a video project that i’m doing at night.  I won’t say much more until i’ve actually made some progress.

Okay this time I really do have struggles.  I decided not to continue on with the 9-5 experiment as I just can’t seem to do it.  My new schedule will be slightly different.  Only 6 hours a day, yep you heard that right 6.  Why did I choose 6?  Well for one thing, one of the statistics for actual amount of work a person really gets done at the office is about 5 hours, the rest is socializing, going to the bathroom, etc.  However for me 5 is a little too little.  6 hours allows me to work on a few or many things, and if i’m doing a solid 6 hours of work then i’m sitting pretty.  It also gives me about 2 hours before my Dad gets home so I can do stuff like take a walk, or do some house cleaning, play my guitar or just generally forums, blogging, whatever.  I’m also including breaks which works.

I’m going to be regularly posting in my blog again starting monday I think, so stay tuned.

And for the record, i’ve gotten in about 12 hours so that’s 145 hours out of 1000.

145/1000 hours

Too true, too true. I have been a Studio Manager for the past 7 years and a huge part of my work is to manage the scheduling of designers and projects. I can say with some hard-earned certainty that the maximum amount of productive work you can get out of an artist is 6.5 hours per day. Even if someone works 10, 12, or more hours the most you can expect on average is 6.5. Sure, you can push it for a day or two to meet a deadline but after a recovery period you net out (over a week where you did overtime on two days, let’s say) with a lower overall average of productive time. Being not naturally inclined to manage my own time effectively, being the time manager for a team of 10 is quite an educational experience. You need to pad yourself.

“if i’m doing a solid 6 hours of work then i’m sitting pretty”

This, I would say, is a valid and honest comment and one that will help you in creating an amazingly productive schedule. Much better than kicking yourself for not meeting the 8.

PS. I’m up to 120-something. I need to count up tonight.

I second that, “too true.” I’m running into the same problems as well. With work, classes and chores I have about 2 hours a day to devote to a project.

Its good to you blogging again and congrats on another 12 hours.
