Enchanted Lands first background concept sketch

Boy is that a lot to swallow. In any case, I’ve been doing several sketches of the first scene or room, and it’s literally a bedroom. John Thomas’ room. This is the layout I liked the best because it was the most interesting, however there may be some problems dealing with the character navigating the room… Things are a bit too close, and you can see more of the top of the dresser than you should, but I’m still working it out. Your goal as a player is to help John find his library card… Of course the room will be a mess and you’ll first have to clean it. This is also where you’ll be introduced to the somewhat different interface, when I get it working, pie or radial menus, and with more options… you’ll have some verbs like look, get, talk, and so forth, but also you’ll have modifiers in it’s own little nested pie menu, like in, on, at, or behind, or under… Haven’t decided what all I want in there, but i’ll try to make it as simple as possible.

Here is the sketch, let me know what you think about the layout?

I bet you the library card is in a pocket of a pair of pants under the bed. Am I right? B-)

Whatever you do, if you have voice acting, please make sure that there isn’t a child who yells “SLAAAAAAAAM DUNK!” whenever he does something cool. I recall playing a game a LONG time ago (OK, maybe 10 years?) in which you had to clean a bedroom as one of your first tasks. If you pick up a piece of paper and throw it in the wastebasket, the kid yells it out. If you throw a paper airplane, it flies around the room and into the trash. He yells it again. That kid was so frickin’ annoying. B-)

I assure you, no annoying kids yelling slam dunk. In fact this guys is in his early 20’s and yeah still lives with his mom… so what of it? ;-)

Interesting thought about the library card location, I might use it. I’m going to script it in such a way as there are several multiple places you could find the library card. Hopefully different with each new game (not save game) you play. I’m not really using replay value like it is in most games, where you have tons to discover so you gotta keep playing it. Replay value will come when after you’ve beat it and put it away for a year, you want to play it again because you enjoy being in the world I have created, much like a movie or a book. Only unlike a movie or a book, things won’t be exactly as you remember them (with the exception of what you need to get and cut scenes).
